From Scrap to Sculpture

FDTC's Welding Technology Program will be hosting the 2018 Welding Rodeo sponsored by Lincoln Electric on Saturday, April 14, 2018 in conjunction with Francis Marion's Arts International Festival. The sculpture competition teams will consist of 4 people plus a coach/instructor that will select scrap metal, design, and fabricate a finished sculpture in just 8 hours. There will be quality individual and team prizes furnished by Lincoln Electric for contest winners, as well as an opportunity to exhibit to all patrons of the Arts International Festival. All sculptures will be subject to a public auction, with the proceeds to benefit the FDTC Welding Student Scholarship Fund.

Saturday’s Competition Itinerary

7:00-7:30am Booth set-up
7:30am “Diving For Scrap”
8:00am-4:00pm Sculpture Fabrication Period
(Lunch will be on your own. Tickets will be issued to the welders)
4:00-4:15pm Judging of Sculptures (Booth Cleanup Begins)
4:30pm Winners of Competition Announced and Live Auction Bidding
4:00-5:30pm Booth Clean Up and Event Closes

Preliminary Competition Details

Each team will be assigned their own workstation. Each workstation will consist of one welder (SMAW/GMAW), an oxy-fuel cutting torch, and the scrap metal the team has previously selected. Several plasma cutters will be made available in a centrally located area for use by all teams. Each team will be responsible for bringing their hand tools. This includes: grinders, extension cords, clamps, hammers, lifting devices, ladders, rolling carts, dollies, work tables, jigs, etc. Individuals must also supply their own personal protective equipment (safety glasses, ear plugs, welding helmets, face shields, etc.).

Note: FDTC will accommodate electrical tools only; compressed air will not be available for pneumatic tools. ONLY LINCOLN ELECTRIC WELDING EQUIPMENT AND PLASMA MACHINES MAY BE USED.

No pre-cut material and/or self supplied materials may be brought. No pre-fabrication and no pre-cut materials will be allowed. Only materials from the scrap pile can be used. All construction must be done on Saturday, April 14th from 8:00am-4:00pm. Teams may bring paint, oils, clear-coats, waxes, pumps, or motors if these are necessary elements of their finished sculpture. Each team will have 8 hours to build and complete their sculpture. All sculptures must be in a finished state, ready to be installed, with a base and fixture accommodations. A panel of three community members will judge each piece based on (1) Aesthetics (2) Quality of Workmanship (3) Adherence to Competition Theme (4) Durability and Safety, and (5) Appropriateness for Public Display.
